At least 1,000 structures destroyed by fast-moving fire in Northern California

"There's nothing left standing", said Scott Maclean, the state's forestry and fire protection spokesman.

With fires also burning in Southern California, state officials put the total number of people forced from their homes at 157,000.

At the moment the fire is in Butte county, powering through Paradise City and under watch from the Paradise Police Department.

Reporter Laura Anthony, of the local ABC station KGO, shot video of a "firenado" in Paradise Thursday.

He estimated the Camp Fire burned a couple of thousand structures to the ground.

All of the above fires are developing so rapidly that there's very little reliable details about them online.

Traffic accidents turned roads into gridlock and residents abandoned vehicles and ran from the flames carrying children and pets, officials said.

"It was just a wall of fire on each side of us, and we could hardly see the road in front of us", Bass said.

Not a single resident of Paradise - population 27,000 - could be seen anywhere in town Friday, the day after majority fled the burning Northern California community that may be lost forever. People reported seeing much of the community go up in flames, including homes, supermarkets, businesses, restaurants, schools and a retirement center.

"From the second it started, it was off to the races", Pimlott said. Many abandoned their vehicles to flee on foot as the flames bore down on all sides.

Butte County Sheriff Korey Honea said one of the additional deaths was said to be near those vehicles, another was inside a residence and at least three were said to be outside of residences.

Acting California Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area and requested a federal emergency declaration, saying that high winds and dry brush presented ongoing danger.

A wildfire (known as the "Camp Fire") in California is threatening to destroy thousands of homes and large amounts of property, prompting mass evacuations.

"Fire is now burning out of control and heading into populated areas of Malibu", the city said in a statement online.

Smoke from the fire drifted in a huge plume and set off smoke alarms as far away as San Francisco, almost 150 miles away.

Elsewhere, the Hill Fire in Ventura County's Santa Rosa Valley had charred about 6,000 acres (2,428 hectares) as of Friday evening, according to Cal Fire. He has late-stage cancer and she is mostly confined to her bed, she said.

The blaze, which spewed massive plumes of thick black smoke, also threatened parts of the nearby town of Thousand Oaks, where a gunman killed 12 people earlier this week in a shooting rampage at a college bar, stunning the bucolic Southern California community with a reputation for safety.

Among them was Kim Curtis, who was searching for her grandmother, who told family at 8 a.m. Thursday that she would flee her Paradise home in her Buick with her cat.

Hundreds of miles south, authorities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties have ordered the evacuation of 75,000 homes, as a wildfire bears down on the beach town of Malibu.
