Reports of an active shooter at Topsail High School are said to be due to faulty mechanical equipment.

Pender Schools clarified Friday morning's situation by stating, "There was a report of an active shooter situation at Topsail High School this morning after noises were heard coming from the top of the building". Topsail Elementary, Middle, and High schools remain on lockdown. Parents should not bring students to these schools, according to Miranda Ferguson, Pender County schools spokesperson.

School buses headed for the school were being diverted to a nearby Lowe's grocery parking lot.

The Topsail High School campus is shut down, with all access roads barricaded by law enforcement.

All of the schools in the district have been placed in lock down.
