Crowd Rallies At State Capitol In Support Of Russia Investigation

"It's not ok for someone to break the law and be above the law".

After Sessions' exit, Trump named Matthew Whitaker, chief of staff to Sessions, as acting attorney general. The protest concluded at 5:40 p.m., with a protester announcing that the demonstration will continue at 2 p.m Friday afternoon at the Oxford Courthouse on the Square.

"I think there are people who are hungry to show they are scared for their country", "It's one day after the election, we're all exhausted ... and I don't think the timing of the announcement from the (Trump) administration is an accident".

Crowds also turned out in Chicago; Greensboro, North Carolina; Chattanooga, Tennessee, and many other places.

In a statement Thursday, the Republican said Whitaker is a "steady hand that will provide good leadership and judgment, and will ensure that the United States Department of Justice upholds the highest standards of the rule of law". Those TV appearances included one on CNN in which Whitaker suggested that the Mueller probe could be starved of resources.

Whitaker has publicly criticized the probe as being too broad, and Democrats have called on him to recuse himself, saying his appointment this week appeared to be an effort by Trump to impede the investigation.

In addition, few analysts dismiss the possibility that, if stifled, the conclusions of the Mueller probe will leak into the public.

A former US attorney and conservative commentator, Whitaker a year ago wrote an opinion piece for CNN arguing that Mueller would be going too far if he investigated the Trump family's finances.

The ongoing investigation has produced guilty pleas from four former Trump aides.

"People ... across this country gathered today to say ..." However, critics are voicing concern about new attorney general Matthew Whitaker's previous statements about the Russian Federation investigation and are demanding that he recuse himself.

Whitaker served as U.S. Attorney in Iowa from 2004 until 2009.

In an interview with Reuters, Clovis said Whitaker is "a wonderful man" and "a dear friend".

Why is anyone surprised that he's now done what he said he was going to do?

"You would always take that meeting".

"Based on my experience with Matt", said John Richter, a former U.S. Attorney in Oklahoma and high-ranking Bush administration Justice Department official, "I think he will act consistently with the best traditions of the department and call things as he sees them".

"We will not allow Trump to get away with obstructing this criminal investigation, and we will not allow Congress to abdicate its responsibility under the Constitution".

He's been described as a Trump loyalist and a possible threat to Special Counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

In an op-ed in August past year he publicly urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the probe - to "limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel". Whitaker accompanied the tweet with his own comment to his followers: "Worth a Read".

Protesters converged in cities nationwide to call for the protection of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into potential coordination between Russian Federation and President Donald Trump's campaign. He said there was no evidence of collusion. "That's where the left seems to be combining those two issues".
