At least 13 dead in California bar shooting

A former Marine - armed with a Glock 21.45-caliber handgun with an illegal extended magazine - opened fire on a packed California country music bar Wednesday night, killing 12 people, including a veteran sheriff's sergeant nearing retirement, officials said.

An undated photo of Ventura County Sheriff Sgt. Ron Helus, who was shot and killed in a mass shooting at a Thousands Oaks, Calif., bar, November 7, 2018. Helus died later at a hospital.

"I told his wife he died a hero", Dean said.

"He gave his all ... he went in to save lives, to save other people", Dean said.

No fatalities have been reported and the Ventura County Star said that at least four ambulances were at the scene to treat the victims.

Numerous patrons were local students from nearby California Lutheran University, ages 19 to 25, attending "College Country Night".

Police officers are working to secure the scene of crime amid reports of "multiple injuries", the Ventura County Fire Department had said earlier.

"It was chaos, people jumping out of windows, hopping over gates and just trying to get out", he said.

Deputies were called to Long's house in response to a disturbance in April, 2018 and "felt he might be suffering from PTSD", he said. We are still looking for the shooter. But most agree that there was a shooting and many people fled the bar and grill.

Defiant Trump blames media, fellow Republicans for House losses
If you were a gambler, you'd be on your way to the betting shop now to put your wager on Donald Trump's re-election in 2020. Mr Trump also congratulated the new governor-elect of Florida Ron DeSantis, who fended off a challenge from the Democrats.

Federal Bureau of Investigation officials were seen visiting a residence believed to be Long's in Newbury Park, California, which neighbors Thousand Oaks.

Sgt. Ron Helus was a 29-year veteran of the police force.

"He didn't say anything, at least not that we could hear", Estron added.

Nick Steinwender, who is part of the university's student government, said his friends were inside the bar when the shooting started.

"This is a very close-knit community", Kuredjian said, adding that Thousand Oaks - north and west of Los Angeles - is a "pro-law-enforcement community" as well.

Holden Harrah, a young man who saw the incident, cried as he told CNN that a place where he goes every week to have fun with friends had been a scene of carnage. They found 12 people dead inside, including the gunman, who was discovered in office and had apparently shot himself, the sheriff said.

Coffman said he bonded with Cody over outdoor activities - he coached his son in baseball starting from age 3 and the two often went fishing together. A reporter spoke to a man who had not heard from his son.

"Within a split second, everybody yelled 'get down, ' " she said.

But when Helus and a California Highway Patrol officer entered the bar about 11:20 p.m., gunshots were already piercing the room.
