First two Muslim women elected to US Congress

Tlaib, a Detroit Democrat, will be the first Muslim woman to serve in Congress. Minnesota Rep. Keith Ellison, a Detroit native, became the first Muslim elected to the chamber in 2007 and, along with Rep. Andre Carson, D-Indiana, is one of two Muslims now serving in the U.S. House.

In 2018, she won the Democratic nomination for Michigan's 13th congressional district and won unopposed.

She made history in 2008 by winning a seat on the Michigan Legislature, becoming the first Muslim woman to do so.

"I stand here before you tonight as your congresswoman-elect with many firsts behind my name", she said amid cheers.

Technically, Palestinian-American Rashida Harbi Tlaib is the first American Muslim woman to be elected to Congress.

They are up against a team who haven't lost a home game for over a year now, including the match-day one fixture against Napoli. Forward El Fardou Ben Nabouhane scored six goals in the qualifying matches, and has 10 Super Liga goals this season.

She chose to run for Congress after Ellison, who is also black, made a decision to give up his seat after 12 years in Congress to run for attorney general of Minnesota.

Both women - Ilhan Omar, 37, and Rashida Tlaib, 42 - are Democrats from the Midwest and outspoken advocates of minority communities that have found themselves in the sights of US President Donald Trump's anti-immigrant policies.

Omar, 36, fled her homeland of Somalia at the age of eight and lived in a Kenyan refugee camp before immigrating with family to the United States.

Asked whether she would consider slashing military aid to Israel with Britain's Channel 4, Tlaib responded, "Absolutely, if it has something to do with inequality and not access to people having justice". I will be using my position in Congress so that no country, not one, should be able to get aid from the United States when they still promote that kind of injustice. "I am for making sure that every single person there has every right to thrive".

Tlaib was endorsed by filmmaker Michael Moore and Sen. "It has to be one state. This whole idea of a two-state solution, it doesn't work". DFL is the state's Democratic Party. She will succeed the first Muslim congressman, Keith Ellison, who vacated the seat to run for Minnesota's Attorney General.
