Russian jet flies dangerously close to Navy aircraft during Black Sea operations

A Russian Su-27 Flanker flew within five feet of an EP-3's wing tip over the Black Sea in January, Navy officials said.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Navy announced that a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft was intercepted earlier on the day by a Russian fighter jet while flying in worldwide airspace over the Black Sea.

It is still unclear at exactly what distance the Russian jet came to the United States reconnaissance.

A Russian Su-27 fighter jet intercepted a U.S. Navy reconnaissance plane Monday over the Black Sea, but the incident was resolved without any hostilities. He added that there was no communication between the two aircraft during the 25-minute ordeal.

The U.S. Navy has released video of what it says was an unsafe interception of a Navy plane by a Russian jet on Monday.

"This interaction was determined to be unsafe due to the SU-27 conducting a high speed pass directly in front of the mission aircraft, putting at risk the pilots and crew".

Samsung hints at foldable smartphone with very obvious logo change
The company says the device is meant to combine both a smartphone and tablet, and will be available to purchase from next month. We've seen foldable displays and concept phones from various companies but nothing concrete on a production unit from Samsung.

In a statement, the U.S. Navy said their plane had to apply its afterburner after the first pass and faced turbulence and vibrations. An RC-135V plane was detected flying above the Barents Sea, while two others, an RC-135U and RC-135V, flew along the Syrian coastline, where two major Russian bases, Hmeymim and Tarsus, are located.

The Su-27 wouldn't need to go all out with afterburners to pass the propeller-driven EP-3, but the burners would likely exacerbate turbulence felt by the Navy crew. "The duration of the intercept was approximately 25 minutes".

While the Russian military is within its right to exercise within global airspace, this interaction was irresponsible.

In a press briefing following the incident, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said that there was "just absolutely no reason for this type of behavior".

The EP-3 is an electronic warfare plane used by the US Navy for surveillance.

The Su-27 can be used for air-to-air combat or in a bomber role.
