Awful news. The Cliffsofmoher suffered a fractured right shoulder when injured in the Melbourne Cup, unfortunately could not be saved.

"The horse received immediate veterinary care, however it was unable to be saved due to the nature of the injury sustained", he said.

Spokeswoman Emily Rice told Australia's SBS News: "We are seeing the more people are educated on what the problem is, the more people make up their own decision to not participate in Melbourne Cup sweeps and events".

O'Brien called the death "very sad" but said it was lucky jockey Ryan Moore remained unharmed.

Channel 7 commentator Bruce McAvaney said it was a "tragedy" while his colleague Richard Freedman had made a point of mentioning how agitated The Cliffsofmoher looked before the race.

Racing Victoria gave a further update in a statement, and assured the public that British jockey Ryan Moore was uninjured. "He's really sweating up badly".

Racehorse The CliffsofMoher has been put down after being injured during the Melbourne Cup.

The Cliffsofmoher is not the first horse to be put down at the Melbourne Cup. He was treated by vets for three weeks after the race, but was eventually euthanised.

The 2014 favourite Admire Rakti collapsed of a suspected heart attack five minutes after the race finished and died in his stable while Arnaldo broke his right hind leg and was euthanised.

The following year fan favourite Red Cadeaux shattered a leg and was put down on the track.

A horse racing in the annual Melbourne Cup carnival has died for the second year in a row.

Stier said the injury to The Cliffsofmoher was an unfortunate incident that happened infrequently, as Victoria had one of the best safety records in world racing.
