Trump, Obama tout clashing visions of US as midterm elections near

Trump is throwing his political muscle behind Republican statewide candidates ahead of midterm elections that could dramatically reshape his presidency.

He says the inflamed rhetoric of the campaign is pulling the two sides into more radical opposition, adding to the business uncertainty of where the US goes next. "The people we need to win in these swing districts that will determine the majority, it's not the Trump base; it's suburban women, or people who voted for [Hillary] Clinton or people who are not hard Trump voters". "That's a great closing argument". "And [voters are] going to say Republicans have offered a record of results and Democrats are offering resistance and going back".

Democrats had a 9-point advantage in October's poll. The one issue they both agree on: Trump.

Democrats benefit from a massive gender gap that has persisted throughout the fall (women favor Democrats 62% to 35%, while men are about evenly divided, 49% back the Republican, while 48% support the Democrat in their district), a wide lead among political independents (53% for the Democrat to 39% for the Republican), and strong support from black and Latino voters (88% of black voters and 66% of Latino voters favor the Democrats).

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll on Sunday suggested that while Democrats retain an edge in their battle for the House, Republicans could profit from increasingly positive assessments of the economy and by Trump's harsh focus on border security.

On the question of whom they would prefer to control Congress, Democrats drew 50 percent of likely voters to Republicans' 43 percent.

It did not take long for the video to go viral, with many praising the former USA president Barack Obama.

Mr. Van Hollen, meanwhile, said Mr. Trump's strident style is keeping his red state incumbents in the game, while giving Democratic challengers in places such as Texas, Tennessee, Arizona and Nevada a shot.

The vote comes at a crucial point in the President's term in office and will give voters a chance to have their say on how well Mr Trump is doing.

Mr Trump said: "Rumour has it that Senator Joe Donnelly of IN is paying for Facebook ads for his so-called opponent on the Libertarian ticket". Heidi Heitkamp is far behind Republican Rep. Kevin Cramer in North Dakota. But the GOP is feeling good about its prospects.

Among Republicans, just 33% think such interference is likely and 57% consider it a major problem or more.

"It has closed", Republican pollster Bill McInturff told the Journal. "I think it's very telling that Barack Obama is out there on the campaign trail".

Bredesen added that he's not running against Trump. Bob Corker, a Republican.

Country singer Lee Greenwood plans to perform Trump favorite "God Bless the U.S.A." in Chattanooga as well as in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, on Monday.

But the president - to the unease of some in the party - has instead used his almost nonstop schedule of campaign rallies to keep the spotlight on what he calls the security threat from migrants seeking to enter the nation through Mexico.
