Amazon is offering free shipping with no minimum purchase

On Monday, Amazon returned fire, saying it will eat the shipping costs on "hundreds of millions" of items on its online bazaar during the holiday rush. Target dropped its $35 minimum for free two-day shipping during the holidays.

Instead of the usual $25 order minimum before shipping and taxes, Amazon is offering free shipping almost all orders shipped and sold by Amazon.

"We know many of our customers are starting to think about Christmas presents, parties and decorations at this time of year and we're excited to offer great deals when shoppers need them most" said Doug Gurr, Country Manager at Amazon UK.

Consumers have long heralded Amazon for its free two-day shipping for Prime accounts on eligible items, prompting other big-box retailers such as Target and Walmart to offer free expedited shipping during the holiday season as well.

"But it is fantastic to have this feeling that it doesn't matter what the score is - it is not over". We've had an inconsistent start to the season and every point is huge for us.

In both cases, the advantage over Amazon was no paid subscription required to qualify for free shipping.

Amazon did not announce a cutoff date for the promotion, but said that free shipping will be available for all orders arriving in time for Christmas. Before, the purchase threshold was $25.

New for this Black Friday, Amazon Fashion has launched its "try before you buy" service, Prime Wardrobe, which aims to make shopping for fashion more convenient than ever.

Amazon isn't the only merchant slashing shipping fees. Sales in November and December - excluding automobiles, gasoline and restaurants - are expected to increase between 4.3 and 4.8 percent over 2017 for a total of $717.45 billion to $720.89 billion, according to figures from the National Retail Federation. Walmart, which offers free two-day shipping on orders over $35, told reporters after the Target announcement that it has no plans to change its shipping policy.
