Amazon in 'Advanced Talks' to Put HQ2 in Northern Virginia Town

Sources familiar with the company's negotiations say Amazon is in advanced stages of discussing the location of HQ2 in Northern Virginia, according to the Washington Post.

Amazon is reportedly in advanced talks with officials in Northern Virginia about the possibility of opening its second headquarters in Crystal City.

The Washington metropolitan area was long considered a top contender for Amazon's second headquarters.

But after publication of the Post story, Mike Grella, director of economic development for Amazon, posted on Twitter: "Memo to the genius leaking info about Crystal City, VA as #HQ2 selection".

However, the Post cautions that it does not mean the deal is certain and that other cities might have "similar discussions".

According to the report "people close to the process" said that Amazon is in discussions about relocating employees to the area, potential office buildings it could occupy, and how to make its announcement to the public.

The report adds that the company is close enough to making its decision that at least one real estate developer in the area has "pulled some of its buildings off the leasing market".

The District and Montgomery County also are among the 20 finalists.

The talks were described as more in-depth than the company has had with other cities that made the tech giant's HQ2 short list. Crystal City is served by Washington's Metro subway system. At stake: the online retail giant's second North American headquarters and 50,000 jobs.

In a subsequent tweet, Grella criticized The Post for a story linking Bezos' private jet's flight history to the Amazon HQ2 search.

An Amazon spokesman declined to comment Saturday.

Amazon is expected to make its decision before the end of the year. A decision is scheduled by the end of the year, with 20 cities in the US and Canada in the running.
