Djokovic, Federer move into Paris Masters quarters

Roger Federer took another step towards his 100th ATP World Tour title as he defeated Fabio Fognini 6-4 6-3 to book his place in the Paris Masters quarter-finals.

As the Swiss legend, Roger Federer steps on the tennis court of Paris he eased his way out through the quarterfinals of the Rolex Paris Masters. And Djokovic took a swift step onwards after Damir Dzumhur was forced to retire at 6-1, 2-1 down.

The Serb learned on Wednesday that he would be back as world number one next week following Rafa Nadal's withdrawal from the tournament through injury. Karen Khachanov saved two match points against John Isner on his way to defeating the eighth-seeded American 6-4, 6-7 (9/11), 7-6 (10/8).

In contrast Djokovic was handed his win by default when his opponent Dzumhir decided he could not continue.

The fifth-seeded Cilic beat ninth-seeded Grigor Dimitrov 7-6 (5), 6-4, needing six set points to win the first set.

The four-time Paris champion, who next faces Marin Cilic in the last eight on Friday, was guaranteed a return to the ranking summit when Nadal withdrew from Paris with an abdominal injury on Wednesday.

The former world No. 3 also had an injury-riddled 2017 campaign, including a seven-week absence due to wrist surgery that cost him a chance to play at that season's U.S. Open. "Obviously he has a big serve and big game from the back of the court, it is just a very powerful style", said Djokovic.

"I didn't come here to win Paris, actually".

Raheem Sterling and Sergio Aguero were among those who didn't make it off the bench. But his agent, and him, finally decides.

"I can not answer. I just go day by day", the 17-time Grand Slam champion said. Until this year, he had only reached the third round at Wimbledon in nine previous visits: This time, he made his first ever Major semi-final, went on to make the quarters at the US Open, and reached a career-high No8.

Federer applied pressure from the off and, with Fognini evidently vulnerable on his second serve, a swift break was secured as the Italian found the net.

Djokovic, who will reclaim the No. 1 ranking next week regardless of where he finishes, faces Marin Cilic in the quarter-finals.

John Isner was a victor and Marin Cilic and Grigor Dimitrov advanced to a Thursday tussle.

Alexander Zverev also won over Frances Tiafoe 6-4, 6-4.

Defending champion Jack Sock shrugged off lucky loser Malek Jaziri from Tunisia 6-0, 6-4, establishing a duel against the 2018 Roland Garros runner-up Dominic Thiem.
