Police open probe into death of Sao Paulo footballer - USA

The 24-year-old's corpse was discovered by shocked passers by in Sao Jose dos Pinhais, a city in Parana and part of the Curitiba region of Brazil, on Saturday night.

Daniel Correa Freitas was reportedly found almost beheaded on a road where criminals usually dump corpses.

While the real cause of his death hasn't been revealed yet, some local media have indicated that he was tortured.

'The man had two deep cuts on his neck, his head was almost beheaded, and his genitals were severed'.

"Since the appearance of the body, it was a very violent situation", said a police officer.

Sao Paulo said in a statement that he was "found dead this weekend".

"The club sympathises and pays condolences to the athlete's family".

Then earlier this month, he told the US Today show that he wished he could have suffered for his son instead. Buble had a rough year coping with his son's cancer diagnosis . "It's weird.

"Everything indicates the man was executed here on the street and dragged for about 30 meters".

The São Paulo Football Club, where Freitas served as a midfielder, confirmed the death on Twitter.

His parent club, Sao Paulo FC, whom he joined in 2015, paid tribute to Correa with its players holding a minute's silence before training on Monday.

However he has spent the past two years on loan, initially with second-division side Coritiba, before moving to Ponte Preta and then Sao Bento.

Brazil is one of the most violent countries in the world where previous year a record 63 880 people were murdered, some 30.8 per 100 000.

Botafogo was among the clubs to offer their condolences.

Freitas was playing for Sao Bento around the time of his death and they were among a string of clubs honouring the player.
