Israel orders criminal probe into Gaza medic’s death

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he welcomes mediation from the United Nations and Egypt to prevent a humanitarian collapse in the Gaza Strip, Israeli media reported Tuesday.

Three Palestinian boys aged between 13 and 14 have been killed in an Israeli air raid in the southeastern Gaza Strip, according to health officials. The Israeli military said they had attempted to damage the border fence and "were apparently involved in placing an improvised explosive device" near it.

The army said that before the strike was called in "warning shots were fired towards them, which they failed to heed" and that military spotters "did not positively identify that they were minors". They came from the village of Wadi al-Salqa around a kilometer from the border fence.

The deaths a day earlier of the teens - ages 13 to 15 - threaten to plunge the area into further violence after a brief exchange of fire over the weekend. According to the U.N., during the border protests, over 1,000 children have been injured by Israeli forces in the besieged Gaza Strip during demonstrations, according to the U.N. Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Since the rallies began on March 30, more than 200 Palestinians were killed, and thousands more injured, by Israeli troops deployed along the other side of the buffer zone.

Israel justifies its blockade by the need to contain Hamas and accused the islamist movement that runs the enclave of orchestrating the protests for "terrorists".

Israel has been criticized by a United Nations human rights body for its killing of protesters in Gaza and treatment of the Palestinians, declaring it as a "war crime" under the Statute of Rome.

Israel and Palestinian militants in Gaza have fought three wars since 2008 and the recent unrest has sparked fears of a fourth.
