Watch NASA release 450,000 gallons of water in 1 minute

As part of the preparations for its new Space Launch System, NASA tested the water deluge system, which includes shooting 450,000 gallons of water on to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center.

During the launch of Exploration Mission-1 and subsequent missions, this water deluge system will release about 450,000 gallons of water across the mobile launcher and Flame Deflector to reduce the extreme heat and energy generated by the rocket during ignition and liftoff.

The main goal of the IOP/SS is to reduce the tremendous amount of heat and energy generated during liftoff - by spraying the launch pad with an impressive quantity of water in order to cool it down.

The water was pushed around 100 feet in the air before spilling back into a large trench where it travels back to holding ponds.

The SLS rocket will lift off with 8.4 million pounds of thrust, thanks to its four RS-25 engines and two solid rocket boosters. Recently released video of one of the tests, conducted on October 15, shows the dramatic action.

The group hadn't claimed the prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters by noon, but the group is pretty confident it's their ticket. One each was sold in Arizona, Washington, DC, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, New Mexico, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

A little more than a minute, she is able to spend about two million liters of water.

NASA posted a video of the October 15 test to YouTube on Friday.

'This is a mission that truly will do what hasn't been done and learn what isn't known, ' said Mike Sarafin, EM-1 mission manager at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

NASA plans to have the system fully tested and ready for the upcoming launch of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket in 2020 for the Orion Spacecraft's Exploration Mission-1 test flight to the moon.

'It will blaze a trail that people will follow on the next Orion flight, pushing the edges of the envelope to prepare for that mission'.
