'Modern Family' fans slam 'significant' character death reveal

Fans of Modern Family have been chomping at the bit and guessing which major character from the long-running ABC comedy will die after series co-creator Christopher Lloyd teased a significant death in September.

But DeDe is certainly one of the show's older characters.

Viewers learned she had a heart problem and died in her sleep.

He added that it would be a "significant character on the series" and it "will be a moving event - and an event that has repercussions across several episodes".

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show's other co-creator Steve Levitan explained that they killed off DeDe because they wanted to "put our characters through something new and interesting and challenging" and because the death "directly affects three of our characters". Well, the deed was finally done in the Modern Family episode, "Good Grief Online".

Shelley Long's DeDe Pritchett fit the death bill as the family gathered for Halloween festivities and received a call from her husband Jerry.

Shelly Long as Dede on an episode of "Modern Family", aired May 2, 2018. "It seemed like an interesting thing to have happen".

'We're handling some bigger life events in this season, ' he said.

Levitan said that the writers made a decision to kill off DeDe because "she's directly involved with three of our characters and she touched everybody's life in some interesting way". We've never seen the entire family have to deal with such a loss.

Meanwhile, Alex had a more out of character (and kind of surprising) reaction to the news - what, you didn't think we were going to spoil that, did you? "So when we were talking at the beginning of the season about some different places to go, this idea came up, and we liked it".
