Magnitude 7.0 quake hits off Greece

The US Geological Survey (USGS) initially reported the quake as magnitude 7.0, but later revised this to 6.8, in line with the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

The epicentre of the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.0, was in the Ionian Sea, some 133.5km south-west of Patras in the Peloponnese.

The natural disaster was so intense that, apart from Greece, it was also felt in southern Italy, Malta and Albania.

A 6.8 magnitude natural disaster struck off the coast of Greece in the early morning hours of Friday, being felt as far as Italy, Albania, Malta and Macedonia.

Authorities issued no immediate reports of damage on Thursday. Local news websites reported that a 15th century monastery in the Strofades area of the island had been damaged.

Attention was focused on the island of Zakynthos, where reports indicated power was out.

In the Ethiopian constitution, the post of president is ceremonial with the prime minister holding the political power. She will replace outgoing president Mulatu Teshome , who resigned unexpectedly.

The quake had a depth of around 16 kilometres.

It claimed firefighters in the regions of Sicily, Calabria and Puglia received thousands of phone calls after the quake struck.

On Twitter, the EMSC is cautioning that while in most places the wave will likely be limited to 20cm (about 7in) high, it could be significantly bigger locally.

It struck at 1.54am (6.54am Singapore time) and was followed by a series of moderate aftershocks.

He added: "Objects fell off shelves".
