Can You Really Cut Down Risk of Cancer By Eating Organic Food?

A health survey of almost 70,000 French adults found those who ate large amounts of organic food had much smaller cancer rates. While in the subsequent survey scientists used the ratio of risk to determine the probability of developing cancer in the other.

Organic foods are those cultivated without using any fertilizer or chemicals such as pesticides and herbicides. He explained that pesticide residues are present in foods and most consumers are exposed to them.

Another link may have been found between eating organic food and having a lower risk of cancer.

For the study, Data was collected from almost 69,000 people taking part in an ongoing French study of the associations between nutrition and health. They were monitored based on how often they ate 16 organic products including fruits, vegetables, meat and fish etc.

The study opens the door to many interesting questions, but it's not going to be the last word on whether organic foods matter for health, and cancer risk in particular. The organic food score ranged from zero to 32 points.

The participants were observed for a period of more than four years, with a number of 1,340 cancers registered during the timeframe. The authors conclude, "Although our findings need to be confirmed, promoting organic food consumption in the general population could be a promising preventive strategy against cancer".

During two follow-up appointments, one in 2009 and another in 2016, the researchers then tracked cancer diagnoses, the most prevalent being breast cancer. Eating organic foods has decreased the risk of getting cancer by up to 25 percent.

The organic food questionnaire was also not validated, making it unclear what researchers were actually measuring.

"We did expect to find a reduction, but the extent of the reduction is quite important", said Julia Baudry, the study's lead author.

"Asking about consumption of organic foods. assesses a behaviour but not the causes of the behaviour", said Dr Jorge Chavarro, co-author of an accompanying editorial and a researcher at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

And the findings were reportedly the same, even when other factors - such as age, class, and existing health problems - were taken into account.
