‘Buck stops with prince for death of Khashoggi’

‘Buck stops with prince for death of Khashoggi’

A member of Prince Mohammed's entourage was allegedly at the consulate at the time.

The writer, who was a contributor to The Washington Post, vanished October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Turkey, where he went to pick up documents for his marriage to his Turkish fiancee.

Saudi Arabia's crown prince denounced the killing of Jamal Khashoggi as a "heinous crime" on Wednesday, breaking a three-week silence on the dissident writer's death just as Iran attacked its regional rival by claiming Riyadh thought it could get away with murder because of its close ties with the Trump administration.

A statement Thursday quoted Saudi Attorney General Saud al-Mojeb as saying that investigators came to that conclusion after evidence presented by Turkish officials as part of the two nations' investigation into the killing.

"The incident that happened is very painful, for all Saudis..."

On Capitol Hill Wednesday, a bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would stop most U.S. arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

"Many are trying to exploit the Khashoggi affair to drive a wedge between Saudi Arabia and Turkey", he said.

Trump said he wanted to believe Prince Mohammed when he said that lower-level officials were to blame for the killing at the Saudi mission.

China to launch lunar lighting into outer space
The extra light could be made to shine into disaster zones during blackouts, aiding relief and rescue efforts, he said. China will launch its first moon from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan in 2020.

"We will continue to explore additional measures to hold those responsible accountable".

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman told a major economic summit in Riyadh on Wednesday that the entire Khashoggi affair has been "a very, very painful incident" for Saudi Arabia and "also for everybody on this planet".

After departing Saudi Arabia, Khashoggi began writing for The Washington Post and continued to criticize the Saudi government.

There were conflicting reports Thursday about whether investigators had searched the well in a case that has geopolitical implications because of the Saudi-Turkish rivalry in the Mideast region, as well as the US alliance with both countries.

In a statement to the Saudi Press Agency, the public prosecutor said that assessment was based on evidence provided by the Turkish authorities.

Khashoggi vanished on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate. Khashoggi's doppelganger was seen at various locations after the scribe was last seen walking into the Saudi consulate, with CNN reporting that the body double was seen exiting the consulate's back door after 90 minutes of Khashoggi's arrival at the premises.

Erdogan gave new details surrounding the killing that involved 15 Saudi agents who started arriving in Turkey the day before Khashoggi was killed, while largely confirming earlier news accounts of Khashoggi's disappearance, including that Saudi agents deployed a body double with Khashoggi's clothes, glasses and beard to walk out of the consulate to make it appear he had left the diplomatic outpost alive.

The Saudis have said that Khashoggi is dead but said the killing occurred after a fist fight went wrong and blamed a "rogue" operation.
