Trump suggests 'rogue killers' behind disappearance of Saudi journalist - USA

After Uber, Viacom and Ford, Google also on Monday boycotted the forthcoming business conference in Saudi Arabia in view of recent developments over disappearance of prominent Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in Turkey. Germany, Britain and France issued a joint statement over the weekend expressing "grave concern" and calling for a credible investigation to ensure those responsible for the disappearance "are held to account".

Trump dispatched his Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to the kingdom on Monday to find out "first-hand what happened, what they know, what's going on".

It comes after oil prices rose following Saudi Arabia's thinly veiled threat yesterday to cut production if the U.S. imposes sanctions amid growing worldwide tension over the disappearance.

King Salman emphasised the importance of the Turkey-Saudi relationship and said no-one should be able to "undermine the strength of this relationship", Saudi's official media reported. "This, I think, depends on the crown prince". These reports have yet to be confirmed publicly by Turkish officials.

Mr Khashoggi, a critic of the Saudi government who has written for the Washington Post, was last seen walking into the consulate on 2 October.

The chairman and ranking member of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, Republican Ed Royce and Democrat Eliot Engel, also released a letter last week, urging Trump to "use all pressure necessary to encourage greater Saudi cooperation in the investigation" into Khashoggi's disappearance.

Global business leaders have also been bailing en masse out of the kingdom's glittering big-ticket investment forum, the Future Investment Initiative, including the CEO of Uber, billionaire Richard Branson, JPMorgan Chase & Co.
