Marine who saved 20 lives during Vietnam receives Medal of Honor

President Trump awarded the Medal of Honor Wednesday to retired Sgt.

"I am accepting this on behalf of all the Marines I had the honor of serving with in Vietnam and who continue to be an inspiration to me every day", Canley said in a press release. During that effort he exposed himself to direct enemy fire as he twice scaled a wall to aid wounded Marines and carry them to safety.

Trump hailed Canley's heroics in the bloody Battle for Hue City in 1968 where a wounded - but "fearless" - Canley took control of his company after his commanding officer was severely injured.

"In one instance after another, John risked his own life to save his Marines", the president said. "There are very, very few people like you, John".

Canley has also been awarded a Bronze Star, a Purple Heart, a Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

"He was always leading and attacking the enemy and always standing up and encouraging us", Fraleigh said.

Canley is the seventh person to receive the Medal of Honor from Trump and the third to receive the award from him for actions during the Vietnam War. "He raced into heavy machine gun fire on many occasions, all to save his fellow Marines".

Congress passed legislation waiving a five-year time limit on awarding the medal. He personally saved a total of 20 Marines.

He is "a Marine warrior, who is bigger than life and beyond the reach of death".

"It's about taking care of subordinates", Canley said in a Marine Corps video interview. After a review of the case, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis agreed in December 2017 that Canley was deserving of the honor. Trump signed the bill into law in January. But Canley's Marines didn't think that was enough.

Canley of Oxnard, Calif., has credited the Marines that he served with for his receiving the award and his numerous acts of valor during that fight. "As we all know we've been in hyperpartisan times, but we all came together, leadership on both sides of the aisle, hopefully, because of our patriotism, but motivated by Sgt".

Canley enlisted in the Marines at age 15, using his brother's paperwork. "I like courageous people, we meet them right here", said President Donald Trump, praising Canley's "unmatched bravery".

Retired U.S. Marine Corps, retired, Sgt. Maj.

"Sgt. Maj. Canley is a shining example of why our armed forces are the best military in the world, and his heroism and bravery showcases what being an American hero truly means", Brownley said last month following the White House's announcement of the award upgrade. "That really offends me", he said.
