Canelo Alvarez Signs Richest Athlete Contract In Sports History

The deal kicks off with the WBA and WBC middleweight king's move up to super-middleweight to take on Liverpool's Rocky Fielding on December 15 at Madison Square Garden in NY.

"This is only from my hard work", Alvarez told ESPN after signing the contract. HBO recently announced they were getting out of the fight game after 45 years at the end of the year.

While it would eclipse the 13-year, $325m (then £208m) contract baseball's Giancarlo Stanton signed in 2014, when broken down on an annual basis he will earn less than the likes of Barcelona footballer Lionel Messi, who has an annual salary of $84m (£64m) according to Forbes.

Mayweather himself looks to be eyeing up another massive pay day, telling TMZ Sports this week that a fight with UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov was "happening" and that he would get a "nine-figure payday". The Mexican boxer will receive additional proceeds from every fight if he surpasses the agreed-upon PPV benchmark for sales.

The potentially good news for fight fans: Alvarez's bouts typically have cost around $80 apiece on pay per view, but the DAZN all-sports streaming service charges $9.99 a month and features an assortment of combat sports offerings, per ESPN.

Canelo's deal is for 11 fights over the next 5 years with subscription video streaming company DAZN, which only launched in the USA back in September.

That deal included a total of 16 bouts each year across the United States on top of Matchroom's existing 16 fight nights in the UK.

It has already signed another top flight boxer when it inked a deal with Anthony Joshua, who holds the IBF, WBA and WBO heavyweight belts.
