Trump Says Not Prepared to Lose Trillions Responding to Climate Change

President Donald Trump, a longtime climate change skeptic, said Monday on a tour of hurricane damage in the southern United States that "something" is happening - but that the change is not permanent.

"When you talk about environment, I am truly an environmentalist", Trump told reporters in Florida when asked about a recent USA research which says that climate change will make the strongest hurricanes even stronger. But I don't know that it's man-made.

On Sunday's 60 Minutes, correspondent Lesley Stahl sat down with Donald Trump to hit on an array of topics including hurricane Michael, which has claimed 19 lives in the Florida panhandle.

Last week's report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - the leading worldwide body evaluating climate change - warned the world was heading towards a temperature rise of 3C.

So it appears that Trump, who has called climate change a hoax and nonexistent in the past, seems to have changed his tune.

Interviewer Leslie Stahl asked the president: "What about the scientists who say it's worse than ever?" "You know, we're talking about over a ... millions of years". I don't want to lose millions and millions of jobs.

Mr Trump added that temperatures "could very well go back" - although he did not say how.

Temperature records kept by Nasa and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration show that the world has not had a cooler-than-average year since 1976 or a cooler-than-normal month since the end of 1985.

Trump in the past has dismissed claims - backed by an overwhelming global consensus of scientists - that greenhouse gases caused by human activity are responsible for a rapidly warming planet, triggering ever more extreme weather.

He ignored a question about whether he would revisit Obama's Paris climate deal. But instead of drafting up policy to limit greenhouse gas emissions and fuel renewable energy growth ASAP, they skipped straight to five of Dana Nuccitelli's Five Stages of Climate Denial - saying it's too late to do anything about it.

On Monday, Trump told journalists that he is "truly an environmentalist".

"So I always used to say the toughest people are Manhattan real estate guys and blah, blah", he said. "It is vicious, it's full of lies, deceit and deception", he said.
