The European Union is adding its weight to worldwide demands for official clarifications about what happened to missing Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The newspaper reported that the officials said "a 15-member team came from Saudi Arabia" and that "it was a preplanned murder" of the writer, who also is a contributor to the Post. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stated that he welcomed Turkish authorities to search the consulate.

USA officials have stated that they are following this case closely. However, the consulate has other entrances and exits as well, through which Saudi officials insist he left.

Qatari broadcaster Al-Jazeera has distanced itself from a news item speculating that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was murdered while visiting the Saudi consulate in Turkey.

"If the worst-case scenario is realized, Saudi Arabia will have links to the murder of a vocal critic in a fashion engineered to create just enough doubt for the veneer of implausible-but-sufficient deniability", the New York-based Soufan Center said Tuesday.

Erdogan told reporters on Sunday that authorities were examining camera footage and airport records as part of their investigation.

The Turkish president had struck a measured tone when pressed on Khashoggi, while allowing government officials and state media to drip-feed allegations.

United Nations human rights experts have called for an immediate global investigation into the disappearance of a Saudi journalist who went missing after visiting the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, with one insisting the case "should not be politicized". "Jamal was - or, as we hope, is - a committed, courageous journalist".

US Vice President Mike Pence also commented on the mystery over the missing journalist, saying "the free world deserves answers".

The U.N. human rights office says the disappearance of a Saudi journalist from the Saudi Consulate in Turkey's largest city is "of serious concern", and is urging the two countries to cooperate in investigating it.

Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency said the delegation would hold talks with Turkish officials over the weekend.

Social media users seemed to agree that Trump's embrace of the Saudi government has empowered the crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman (MBS).

Prince Khalid bin Salman, the Saudi ambassador to the US, sought to convey sympathy with carefully moderate criticism in a note to friends in English the embassy shared with reporters. Saudi Arabia may have agreed to the search in order to reassure its Western allies and the worldwide community.

Without a doubt, though, the implications of Khashoggi's disappearance are wide-ranging, aside from being traumatic and potentially tragic for his family and friends.

Khashoggi has been a vociferous critic of Prince Mohammed's policies in both the Arab and Western press.

Khashoggi, 59, who has lived in self-imposed exile in the US for the a year ago, first visited the consulate on September 28 to get a document related to his upcoming wedding, his fiancee and friends told the Post. Turkish officials have said they fear the columnist was killed at the premises.

He compared the 33-year-old prince to Russian President Vladimir Putin in a column for the Washington Post in November 2017. "Now, nobody will dare to speak and criticize the reforms", Khashoggi said.
