Garcia beats Pliskova to win Tianjin Open title

Second-seeded Caroline Garcia won her first tournament of the year with a 7-6 (7), 6-3 win over top-seeded Karolina Pliskova in the Tianjin Open on Sunday.

There was no way back, though, and Garcia closed out the match for her first title of the year as Pliskova takes her Finals bid to the Kremlin Cup.

Garcia moved into Sunday's final with a 6-3 6-4 win over fifth-seeded Hsieh Su-wei.

However, the Czech suddenly made a series of errors and allowed Garcia back into it. Garcia saved a set point at 5-6 before going on to win the hour long first set. Garcia found herself with two set points during the remainder of the tiebreak, and completed her comeback in the breaker with a forehand volley victor, taking the set after a grueling 63 minutes.

Germany had chances to grab a leveller after the break, with substitute Leroy Sane steering a glorious opportunity wide. Low's Germany , who won the World Cup in 2014, have only one point from their opening two Nations League matches.

Singapore nerves seemed to affect Pliskova.

After both players held their serves in a tight first set, world No. 16 Garcia fought from 1-5 down to edge the decisive tiebreak 9-7.

Former top-10 player Petkovic looked set to make her first final since 2015 but 23-year-old Alexandrova, ranked 119, mounted a superb comeback to triumph 0-6 6-4 6-0.

But the sixth ace of the match, the 242 this season, gave her the sixth title.
