US Defence Chief Jim Mattis,

Stahl then asked specifically about Secretary of Defense James Mattis at which point President Trump says that the General is "sort of a Democrat and that he may leave, but that would not necessarily indicate any problems in their relationship". "I don't know, he hasn't told me, but I have a very good relationship with him", the president said.

President Donald Trump forecasted a potential post-midterm White House shake-up in his 60 Minutes interview that airs Sunday evening. "It could be that he is" leaving, Mr. Trump said, responding to a question about whether he wants Mr. Mattis to leave.

"I have people now on standby that will be phenomenal", the president said, "They'll come into the administration, they'll be phenomenal". "But General Mattis is a good guy". "I mean, at some point, everybody leaves".

This marks the first time that the Republican President has publicly said anything negative about Mr Mattis, who last month told reporters not to take seriously reports that he may be leaving.

The Saudi dissent vanished after entering the Gulf kingdom's consulate in Istanbul , Turkey 12 days ago. She said investigators were examining his cellphones, which he had left with her.

There reportedly has been friction between the two men over issues including Mr. Trump's proposal to ban transgender troops. He also dubbed the nearly daily media reports detailing "chaos" within the White House as "fake news". "They'll come into the administration, they'll be phenomenal", Trump said.

Reporter Leslie Stahl confronted Trump with allegations that Mattis is almost ready to submit his resignation, but the president remained adamant that Mattis hasn't told him about any plans to leave. "And I have other people that I'm beyond thrilled with", he said. "People leave. That's Washington". "We're going to do whatever we can do to get it slowed down".

He said that while he was satisfied with the performance of certain members of his administration, there are others "that I'm not thrilled with".
