Former UK envoy says May's Brexit plan a 'pipe dream'

Both sides now face the prospect of beginning the crunch summit without a draft divorce deal, increasing the chances of a disorderly and damaging British departure from the bloc.

Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab insisted a no deal was "unlikely".

"Nearly two and a half years on from the (EU membership) referendum, we are, both on the European Union deal and on other post-Brexit trade deals, still lost in campaign mode on fantasy island", Rogers said in a highly critical speech Wednesday in Cambridge.

Britain's Brexit secretary, Dominic Raab, made a rush visit to Brussels on Sunday for talks with Michel Barnier, the top European Union negotiator as Brexit talks accelerated ahead of a summit later this week.

The EU's version of the backstop, which would see just Northern Ireland remain aligned with Brussels' rules, has been called unacceptable by Mrs May and is despised by the DUP.

The need to resolve the backstop issue is a political headache for the Prime Minister, who depends on the votes of the 10 DUP MPs to prop up her administration in Westminster.

Mrs Thornberry defended the six tests set out by Sir Kier for a Brexit deal - including that it delivers the exact same benefits as membership.

According to No.6 Convent Place, the recourse mechanism for the UK-EU Agreement, if agreed, will be a joint committee between the UK and the EU overseeing separate specialised committees covering areas like Gibraltar, Northern Ireland and Cyprus.

The transition extension would nearly certainly ensure that the Brussels backstop proposal, where Northern Ireland remains within the EU's customs union and single market after Brexit, will never be enacted.

The EU is evidently still hoping it can pull off a deal by "de-dramatising" the Irish border question with a minimum of checks on goods going from Britain to Ireland in British ports and premises.

As negotiations for the wider Withdrawal Agreement continued in Brussels ahead of a summit starting on Wednesday, UK Cabinet ministers were urged to speak out against her plans and potentially quit in protest at any deal which could see the UK indefinitely tied in to the EU's customs union.

Writing in The Sunday Times, Mr Davis said: "This is one of the most fundamental decisions that government has taken in modern times. It is time for cabinet members to exert their collective authority", wrote Davis, who campaigned for Britain to leave the European Union in the 2016 referendum.

May also faces obstacles from the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in Northern Ireland, which has played a crucial role in propping up her minority government in the United Kingdom parliament.

Asked if there would be a date, he said: "There are different ways to ensure that something is time limited".

This is despite DUP leader Arlene Foster reportedly being "ready" to trigger a "no-deal" Brexit.

"This backstop arrangement would not be temporary".

Eurosceptic lawmakers in her Conservative Party are also concerned about a backstop, fearing it could keep Britain in the EU's sphere of influence possibly forever and stop the country from striking new trade deals with the rest of the world.

"What we can not do is see the United Kingdom locked in by the back door to Customs Union Arrangement what it should leave us in a definite limbo".
