Police say the nine of the 11 remains were found in a cardboard box as well as a small casket inside inside a lowered ceiling, hidden away at the former funeral home on the east side.

CONSTRUCTION workers have made a chilling discovery at a former funeral home in the USA state of MI after finding the bodies of 11 babies decomposing in the roof.

In April state inspectors found decomposing bodies in an non-refrigerated garage and a back room of the home, WDIV reported.

The remains were transferred to the Wayne County Medical examiner, WJBK reports.

"They took the boxes and the casket down and discovered 11 remains of infants (and) still-borns and obviously we're here doing a follow up investigation".

"We have to find out what happened, and why it happened", Bowser said. The former funeral home is being turned into a community center.

The Detroit Police Department will continue to investigate the discovery Friday and had cadaver dogs searching the property, Bowser said.

Detroit police have ordered the search of the entire building to make sure there are no additional bodies inside.

LARA shut down Cantrell Funeral Home in April for multiple violations including the improper storage of embalmed bodies, two of which were in an advanced stage of decomposition. The inspectors also claimed the owners had mishandled funds and suspended the funeral home's licence.

"If I had them in the funeral home then my funeral home wouldn't smell fresh ... so yes they are embalmed and serviced we put them in the garage", Cantrell said at the time.
