Awareness rally marks World Mental Health Day

Ghana will mark World Mental Health Day today with a public lecture on mental health at the Ebenezer Presbyterian Church Hall at Osu in Accra.

Health Minister Jackie Doyle-Price will lead the national effort and try to end the stigma which stops people from seeking help, Theresa May announced as she marked World Mental Health Day.

The theme for this year is "Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World".

More importantly, no statistic can ever begin to capture the devastating and isolating impact on those people affected by mental health issues, and on their families and friends.

The report also reveals that in many countries, people with mental disorders still routinely suffer gross human rights violations - including shackling, torture and imprisonment.

This year we have committed to prioritising mental health in the workplace and signing the Employer Pledge with Time to Change is an important step towards this. "Young people that we're seeing are going through adolescence, they are going through the demands and challenges of puberty and that can affect their thought processes and how they rationalise things out".

New mental health support teams will work with schools to ensure young people get the help they need.

When experts convened for the third High-Level United Nations Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases (NCDs) last month, one of the key takeaways was the recognition of mental health conditions as a cause for concern at the same level as other chronic conditions.

There is no specific treatment for AFM, but a neurologist may recommend certain interventions on a case-by-case basis. Symptoms can include arm or leg weakness, loss of muscle tone, respiratory failure and even death.

Mental Health Week will climax on October 13 with a 20/20 cricket match at the Police Recreation Grounds from 9 a.m.
