Red Sox beat Yankees, advance to ALCS

The Red Sox beat the Yankees 4-3 in Game 4 of their ALDS on Tuesday night to win the series 3-1 and advance to the ALCS.But man, did it ever come down to a heart-pounding finish for fans of both teams.

"He's always bad", Sabathia said. "We hate losing to them and we love beating them".

NY mounted a last-ditch rally against wild closer Craig Kimbrel, scoring twice in the ninth inning. Gleyber Torres hit a slow roller that third baseman Eduardo Nunez charged and threw across the diamond. The Yankees immediately challenged and, with a sellout crowd standing and hoping, the out call was upheld after a 63-second look. Kimbrel and the Red Sox - suspended in mid-celebration for a minute - resumed bouncing around in excitement.

"I do feel with that adjustment he'll be back to the guy that pitched in the middle of the summer and he is going to dominant and be a huge part of what we do", he said.

"This one I'll remember for a long time", said Holt, unaware of his achievement until told by a television reporter right after the final out.

Boosted by noisy fans in their homer-friendly ballpark, the Yankees entered 7-0 at home the past two postseasons - against out-of-division opponents.

It was clear from the end of the second inning - maybe even the first - that Severino did not have it when he took the mound to face the Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS.

"I didn't expect to come here and lose two in a row".

This time, a 2018 season that began with sky-high expectations - now over in bitter disappointment.

The New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox may have the most heated rivalry in baseball, but that won't prevent Mookie Betts from showing some common courtesy. Masahiro Tanaka was the only one to get an out in the fourth.

While it is true the stakes were not quite as high Monday night, they were close, and at the very least required some higher degree of urgency than Boone displayed - particularly when the signs were everywhere that Severino lacked his best stuff. "The ball just bounced their way".

Malaysia's Leunkwang Kim will also make his dream debut in the event after winning the CIMB National Championship. If I had not received the invitation from Malaysia, who knows, I may not have played in Mayakoba.

"An embarrassing day", shortstop Didi Gregorius said.

Boston also clinched its third consecutive division crown on enemy ground September 20.

Porcello said he had never been that nervous in a game before.

On deck, a long winter of wondering how they've fallen behind in a rivalry they dominated for almost a century. The Red Sox are looking to win their 12th American League pennant. "It was loud and had a good atmosphere back then, but I think just starting with last year's Wild Card Game, there was a different buzz". Kinsler then doubled to left field, plating Pearce to make the score 2-0.

One night after Boone, the Yankees manager, had his bullpen moves (and non-moves) scrutinized mercilessly in the NY papers - the consensus being that he was too late in pulling his starter and too passive in deploying his better arms in what would become an ugly 16-1 loss - the Yankees, this time facing elimination, again fell behind in the early innings with the bullpen at rest.

Before the last two games, NY was 7-0 at home over the past two postseasons.

The New York Yankees were 6-0 at home in the postseason previous year, and enter Monday's ALDS Game 3 with the AL Wild Card Game win in their pinstriped back pocket.

"It's a good song". "We like to hear that song sometimes when we win a big game".

That was the last time they did.

Boone acknowledged some regret in allowing ace Luis Severino to start the fourth inning down 3-0.
