Cardinal DiNardo Welcomes Vatican Inquiry Into McCarrick Scandal

Pope Francis speaks with the media onboard a plane during his flight back from Tallinn after the final leg of his visit to the Baltic states, Estonia.

Pope Francis called on Catholics to pray for the church last week, saying that the devil is trying to divide it as cases of sexual abuse from around the world continue to make headlines.

"You have sufficient elements to justify your actions and distinguish between what it means to cover up crimes or not to deal with problems, and to commit some mistakes, " Francis wrote.

"In response to your unjust and unjustified attack, dear Vigano, I conclude that your accusation is a political setup without any real foundation that could incriminate the pope, and I repeat that it has profoundly wounded the communion of the church", Ouellet wrote.

In August, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court released a grand jury report detailing sexual abuse. Wuerl presided over 32 accused priests during his time at the Pittsburgh diocese.

A website demanding that he step down eventually garnered more than 100,000 signatures in just a couple of weeks and everywhere Wuerl went, he was beginning to lose support. As for not attempting to defend himself, Wuerl didn't mind when the archdiocesan office did it for him.

However, because they were only rumors and not proof, then-Pope Benedict XVI never imposed formal sanctions on the retired Washington prelate, which means Pope Francis never lifted them, Cardinal Ouellet wrote October 7 in an open letter to Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the former Vatican nuncio to the United States. Usually a new bishop is announced at the same time as such a resignation.

The Vikings were on a two-game losing streak, and may have saved their season with a win, which improved their record to 2-2-1. Instead, they punted and then the defense gave up a drive that ended in a 52-yard field goal to put the game out of reach.

As for the written instructions the Congregation for Bishops prepared for Archbishop Vigano in 2011 when he was to begin his service as nuncio to the United States, "they say nothing at all about McCarrick". "Once again for any past errors in judgment I apologise and ask for pardon". "My resignation is one way to express my great and abiding love for you the people of the Church of Washington".

"I therefore consider it to be aberrant that you should profit by the terrible scandal of the sexual abuse of minors in the United States to inflict such an unprecedented and unmerited blow on the moral authority of your Superior, the Supreme Pontiff".

It is noted that now deepens the polarization between conservatives and liberals in the Church.

In the September letter, Wuerl said a decision on his future was "essential" so that his archdiocese "can move forward". Francis has said the devil is ultimately behind sex abuse of children by priests and current divisions in the Church.

Ouellet's letter was issued Sunday, a day after Francis authorized a "thorough study" of all Vatican archives into how McCarrick rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church despite allegations he sexually preyed on seminarians and young priests. Wuerl denies having been aware.

Donald Wuerl will reportedly retain his title of cardinal and continue in his role until a successor is found.

Francis accepted McCarrick's resignation as a cardinal in July after a United States church investigation determined that an allegation that he groped a teenage altar boy in the 1970s was credible.
