Jose Mourinho claim made by Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho survived a wild weekend at Old Trafford to escape what he described as a "manhunt" after a awful start to the season.

Anthony Martial levelled to set up a tense finish before substitute Alexis Sanchez inflicted a cruel defeat in front of the 3,000-strong travelling supporters.

Seven minutes in, Kenedy latched onto an Ayoze Perez through ball before shifting the ball onto his favoured left side and curling the ball past David De Gea into the far corner.

United head into the worldwide break in eighth following the win over Newcastle.

"But really, all they have done is beat a team which has not won all season and is in the bottom three".

Both United and Chelsea have struggled defensively this season, but Mourinho is keen to spend big in the new year amid concerns over his position at Old Trafford.

Despite rumors he'd be fired after the Newcastle game no matter the result, it's hard to see the United board getting rid of Mourinho after such a thrilling comeback. He was the only Manchester United player who had showed any bottle in a team who, at one stage, became frightened of their own shadows against Newcastle. He spent all summer groaning about a lack of support in the transfer market, then talked about how he had overachieved with last year's squad, one of the most expensive ever put together.

Meanwhile, United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward is "loathe to axe Mourinho" because it would mean a third sacking at the club since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013, and of course there's also the question of money. "But the fact they were 2-0 down in the first place says it all", he added.

While the final 25 minutes saw United at their best, everything that came before was them at their worst.
