Von Miller on Patrick Mahomes: ‘He’s a great QB'

Denver's three-and-out and shanked punt gave the Chiefs the ball at their 40 and brought the Broncos' exhausted defenders right back onto the field with 4½ minutes remaining. The Chiefs-Broncos game led to a 9.1 overnight rating, which was up eight percent from the year before.

Thanks in part to a left-handed throw from the right-handed Mahomes in the final minutes as he was about to get sacked on third-and-5 at midfield, the Chiefs (4-0) took a two-game lead over the Broncos (2-2) in the AFC West with their sixth straight win over their rivals.

Even if Patrick Mahomes plays another 15 seasons, we'll still remember the left-handed throw.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes #15 of the Kansas City Chiefs throws a left-handed pass for a completion while he is hit by linebacker Von Miller #58 of the Denver Broncos in the fourth quarter of a game at Broncos Stadium at Mile High on October 1, 2018 in Denver, Colorado.

"I didn't know he threw it with his left hand", Miller said. "We've seen it in practice but not under those conditions".

"They ran downhill, but you score points by throwing the football", Broncos coach Vance Joseph said. The play clock expired before the ball was hiked, but no penalty was called.

On the decisive drive, the Chiefs faced second-and-30, yet Mahomes responded with a 23-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson and a 35-yarder to Demetrius Harris to get the ball to the Denver 11.

The former Texas Tech standout has thrown for 1,200 yards and 14 touchdowns with zero interceptions in the first four games of the season.

Said Keenum after the game: "There's a few, especially those type of plays, that I'll lose a little sleep over, thinking about it, laying at night in bed".

This loss was just as heartbreaking as the one the Broncos dropped at home against the Chiefs in 2016, when they had a chance to move to 8-3 on the season but couldn't close it out in overtime.

Chiefs: Wide receiver Sammy Watkins pulled a hamstring in the second quarter and didn't return. They've played three games on the road, and two of those wins have come against division opponents. The Broncos entered the fourth quarter with a 20-13 lead, which the team stretched to a 10-point lead with 12:47 left on the clock. On third down, Case Keenum was forced out of the pocket, and ran out of bounds as the Broncos went three-and-out for the first time since the second quarter.
