Mississippi official: 2 officers dead; suspect in custody

Two police officers are dead following an early morning confrontation in Mississippi.

The Mississippi Department of Public Safety said two police officers died in an incident that occurred early Saturday morning in the city of Brookhaven. The suspect, 25-year-old Marquis Flowers, was injured during an exchange of gunfire with police and transported to a local hospital for treatment. "I just want y'all to know these are two awesome people that lost their lives in the line of duty, and they're both heroes". "They're in the presence of Jesus right now". It is not clear why Flowers - who police said turned himself in after he twice eluded police, then abandoned the vehicle he was driving and stole a pickup truck - was not sent back to prison to serve the time remaining on his auto burglary sentence. He was taken to a Jackson hospital.

Law enforcement agents secure the scene of a shooting in Brookhaven, Miss., where two police officers were killed Saturday morning, September 29, 2018.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is working the case, in addition to other agencies, the Associated Press reports.

The deputy was among eight people - including two boys - shot and killed at various locations by Willie Godbolt, 35, who was charged with one count of capital murder and seven counts of first-degree murder, according to police. He's pleading not guilty and faces the death penalty if convicted.
