Georgia HS linebacker seriously injured in football game dies

Pike County High School junior linebacker Dylan Thomas was seriously injured during Friday night's game against Peach County and transported from the field in an ambulance. Thomas returned to the field but collapsed shortly afterwards on the sidelines when his leg and arm went numb.

Dylan was taken roughly an hour north to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where Sports Illustrated reports he had two surgeries in a bid to reduce brain swelling. He remembered his nephew in a touching post on the social media platform.

Many local citizens have come together to support the family.

"Christion is resting. He's fighting", Abercrombie's mother, Staci Abercrombie, said in a statement through the school's sports department on Sunday.

A fundraiser for medical costs and lost income started by Burgess had raised about $24,600 by Monday morning.

Thomas collided with another player in the middle of the game, but returned to the field, his uncle told FOX 5.

"Our hearts are broken, but our prayers and love go out to his family and friends in their time of need", a message on Peach County High School's Facebook page read.

11Alive reached out to the Pike County School Superintendent Dr. Michael Duncan Sunday morning, who said they would "circle the wagons for this family".

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
