FBI investigating after Pentagon receives two packages containing poison ricin

Officials say the packages were delivered on Monday.

Two packages containing a suspicious substance have been found at a Pentagon mail screening facility and sent to the Federal Bureau of Investigation analysis, officials say.

The FBI issued a statement that it took possession of the envelopes, and they are undergoing further testing.

Defense department spokesman Chris Sherwood said at least two suspicious packages, addressed to someone in the Pentagon, were intercepted at a nearby screening center on Monday.

The remote mail facility was set up after the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent anthrax scare, to ensure that letters and packages can be screened for risky substances before they enter the Pentagon.

Local news affiliate FOX 5 DC says that the mail did not enter the Pentagon, according to US officials.

'Those envelopes are now undergoing further testing.

He stressed that authorities were still waiting for confirmation that the packages contained ricin.

Ricin is a poison that is released from castor beans if the beans are crushed; it can also be derived from the waste products left after castor bean processing to make castor oil.

Sources tell CBN News the mail initially tested positive for ricin.

Ricin is a poison that can take several different forms, but as a purified powder it can be deadly.
