Volkswagen's supervisory board on Friday gave the green light for a strategic partnership between the Wolfsburg-based carmaker and Microsoft that will see the two companies develop connected cars together using cloud technology.

"The Volkswagen Automotive cloud will be built from the ground up on top of Microsoft's Azure cloud and IoT Edge platform as its technology foundation", Microsoft explained today. The German giant announced Friday that it will be teaming up with Microsoft for connected auto and cloud services despite a hush-hush deal with Apple to develop autonomous technology. "The world's leading companies run on Azure, and we are thrilled that Volkswagen has chosen Microsoft".

From 2020, Volkswagen will integrate more than 5 million Volkswagen-branded vehicles per year to an internet of things network. "Together we will reimagine the driving experience for people everywhere".

Microsoft and Volkswagen will apparently be working very closely on this new platform, and the German vehicle maker will open a new legal entity close to Microsoft's Redmond headquarters to develop the project. The automaker plans to set up an automotive cloud development center near Microsoft's Redmond headquarters with a workforce that'll grow to 300 engineers. To help usher in a new wave of automotive transformation, Microsoft will provide hands-on support to Volkswagen as it ramps up its new automotive cloud development office, including resources to help drive hiring, human resources management and consulting services. The office is expected to employ almost 300 engineers in the near future.
