Ryder Cup 2018: Mickelson snubbed by reeling U.S.

It was the first time Europe had won all four foursomes matches - having suffered a 4-0 reverse in the format en route to defeat in Hazeltine two years ago - and their first sweep in either format since 1989.

McIlroy was sent out in the afternoon alongside Ian Poulter but was unable to secure his third point of the tournament as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas won 4&3. Same with captain Jim Furyk, who is keenly aware of the Americans' struggles in the event and has been around for all the recent changes that were to put the Americans on a better path to greatness. He hasn't played since Friday in a foursomes loss that lasted only 14 holes.

"There's a lot of matches to be played, " Woods said. "I'm just glad we've done our job for the team".

Poulter and McIlroy got off to a great start when they went 2 UP after three holes.

Finally they waited for this joyful news. "About four months into it, Chris came to me and said, 'Something's wrong". The mother of two doesn't often post photos of her children with ex-husband Coldplay frontman Chris Martin .

Sergio Garcia and rookie Alex Noren led the way by annihilating Phil Mickelson and Bryson Dechambeau 5 and 4 and it could have been even more emphatic as they led by seven after a front-nine birdie-fest.

Once again too many USA players were too loose off the tee and too aggressive with their approaches, captain Jim Furyk looking on in blank-faced disbelief as his team of star names and major winners failed to cope with the challenging but never vindictive course set-up. Spieth and Thomas, longtime friends who have known each other since junior golf, went 3-1 across the four team sessions. All three wins have come against Woods.

"We know exactly what the issue has been, " Mickelson said prior to the Ryder Cup. "Now that we as a group - Tiger, myself, Furyk and (assistant Steve) Stricker - we've been part of the winning side on the Presidents Cup, we've been on the losing side on the Ryder Cup. we know exactly what the difference is and now that we have involvement we're going to fix it".

With a home Ryder Cup this week, that fan behavior didn't seem it would be something to come up with McIlroy this time. Yet... Europe pulled off such a comeback en route to a 14.5-13.5 victory at Medinah in 2012, and the USA overcame the same deficit in 1999 to win by the same score at the Country Club.
