Passenger plane lands in ocean after overshooting runway

The accident took place at Chuuk global airport on Weno island of South Pacific nation of Micronesia.

A flotilla of small boats rescued all 47 passengers and crew from an Air Niugini flight that crashed into the sea short of the runway at an airport in the tiny South Pacific nation of Micronesia on Friday, the airport's manager said.

The Boeing 737-800 was scheduled to stop in Chuuk on its way from Pohnpei to Port Moresby.

He said the passengers and crew were at the local hospital undergoing checks, with no serious injuries reported.

Papua New Guinea authorities confirmed that the Air Niugini flight PX073 ended up in the ocean while trying to land at about 9.30am (local time) in Chuuk.

Air Niugini is the national airline of Papua New Guinea and has been in operation since 1973.

Officials with the airline were reportedly in a meeting regarding the incident.

The cause of the crash is unclear, but investigations are due to begin soon. "So far, we don't know why they went down".

"Somebody has to look into that and let us now", he told the news website.
