Oculus launches Quest standalone VR headset, eyes mixed reality future

"This is the all-in-one VR experience we have been waiting for", Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the company's Oculus Connect event in San Jose. The Quest uses two Oculus Touch controllers, and has four wide-angle cameras for positional tracking that can allow people to explore virtual spaces up to around 400 square feet. The Oculus Rift, with the cable attaching the HMD to a computer with a gaming-strength GPU will still be in the lineup, for those wanting the complex graphic-intensive experiences (games, as mentioned from the stage). The bundle launches in Spring 2019 for the price of USD399. And here's the kicker, it doesn't have any wires nor does it require a PC to run. This seems like a natural step, given that the app was previously announced for the Samsung Gear VR, which is also based on Oculus.

The most interesting aspect is that Oculus Insight actually learns your room layouts. To improve things further, Oculus has also included lens spacing adjustments like on the Rift to make things more comfortable and improved Oculus Go's built-in audio credentials - which were already rather impressive. The device launches next spring and will have 50 titles available at launch, including the critically acclaimed Moss. The Oculus Touch controllers have also been slightly tweaked, and they are also compatible with Rift.

Oculus have been keen to promote the Oculus Go as a way to take in live events as well, introducing Oculus Venues for this goal earlier this year. "Oculus Go" remains the easiest and most affordable way to get into VR, while "Oculus Rift" leverages the power of your PC to push the limits of what's possible", Oculus wrote in a blog post. It has announced that YouTube VR will be coming to the device soon. There was no follow-up announcement for the entire list of games that will launch on the Quest.

The Oculus Quest will complete the first generation of Oculus products.

Within Insight, there is also a feature called Guardian that is created to avoid users from bumping into walls or other objects that might be on users way when they used Quest.
