Cristiano Ronaldo red card: Ronaldo confident he WILL play against Manchester United

The referee was greeted by no fewer than three members of Juventus' board of directors at the midway point of the Italian side's 2-0 Champions League victory over Valencia this week.

Ronaldo was dismissed on his Champions League debut for Juve after a clash with Jeison Murillo was spotted by the assistant referee and communicated to German referee Felix Brych, who drew a red card from his top pocket.

In an editorial entitled "dedicated to Cristiano Ronaldo", Tuttosport journalist Xavier Jacobelli on Thursday railed against the "scandalous" performance of Brych and Fritz, labelling the pair's decision to give Ronaldo his marching orders a "veritable insult to football". Ronaldo was seen protesting against a dive by Murillo and he put his hand on the Colombian defender's head.

UEFA rules state that a player who is sent off is suspended for the next match in the competition but if the episode is deemed a "serious offence", he could miss more games. The Portuguese superstar was shown a straight red card for a tussle with opponent player Jeison Murillo in the 29th minute of the Group H match between Juventus and Valencia. He won the first of his five Champions League titles while with United in 2008.

The reported punishment means Ronaldo will miss Juventus' home game against Young Boys on October 2 but will be available to face former club Manchester United on October 23 at Old Trafford.

Juventus midfielder Blaise Matuidi urged UEFA to show leniency. We risked losing tonight with this and we'll miss him for the next games too. "It was very harsh, I think if you saw the replays, you could see it's an incomprehensible decision", Matuidi said.

"Ronaldo was angry, of course".
