Two shark attacks in 24 hours on Australia's Whitsunday Islands

The Brisbane Times reports that the woman, 46, suffered significant injuries when she was attacked where she was swimming near a yacht in Cid Harbour, just off Whitsunday Island on Wednesday around 5pm.

A 12-year-old girl was attacked by a shark in waters off Australia's tropical northeast coast on Thursday (Sep 20), an ambulance official said, the second attack in the tourist region in as many days.

However, by pure coincidence, one of her rescuers was an emergency department doctor, whose actions saved her life.

A girl has sustained serious injuries after being bitten on the leg by a shark at Cid Harbour after midday today.

'By all accounts it was very serious and without the rescue helicopter she probably would have died, but those people did save her life by stopping the haemorrhaging, ' she said.

A doctor happened to be on a nearby yacht and helped slow the bleeding before a rescue helicopter arrived.

"A critical care paramedic is at the scene with the RACQ CQ (Royal Automobile Club of Queensland) helicopter".

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed that the woman remained in a critical condition on Thursday morning.

The helicopter airlifted the woman to Mackay Base Hospital, landing after 8pm.

"It is is quite confronting to have two similar incidents in the space of 24 hours", she said.

In 2017, a father-of-two from Cairns lost his right leg and nearly died when he was mauled by a shark while spearfishing off Hinchinbrook Island.
