Trump pledges strong federal support for hurricane-stricken Carolinas

Officials have identified the two mental health patients who drowned when a van they were riding in was swept away in SC flood waters.

Trump's trip to the state follows criticism for his handling of Hurricane Maria, which devastated Puerto Rico past year, and more recently for disputing the official death toll of 3,000 in the US territory. Dozens of shelters remain open across the state, and several rivers have yet to crest.

Trump was joined aboard Air Force One by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Republican elected officials, including Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of SC and Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis of North Carolina.

After landing in North Carolina and surveying damage, the president flew to SC. "I can't tell you why, but I love that area".

Cooper warned that the flooding set off by the Southeastern deluge was far from over and will get worse in places. On Tuesday in Wilmington hundreds of people waited in long lines for water and other essentials.

"I'm just assuming, based on the depth of the water that we had in North Carolina and the amount of rainfall, that we probably will exceed what we had in [Hurricane] Matthew", Agriculture Commissioner Steve Troxler said in an interview, referring to hog losses.

"It's truly devastating for me to see the damage that Hurricane Florence is doing to my beloved home state of North Carolina and to the surrounding areas", Jordan, who is the owner of the Charlotte Bobcats of the National Basketball Association, said last week in a statement posted on the team's website announcing its charity work. A woman blew a whistle each time drivers had to pull forward.

Many rivers are still rising and some are in major or record flood stage.

The Dutchman said: "Everybody knows the story of me and Manchester United was not successful but I'm just happy that I'm the player I am today".

Todd Tremain needed tarps to cover up spots where Florence's winds ripped shingles off his roof.

North Carolina is still reeling from Hurricane Florence.

He sympathized with those who were forced to flee and are now relying on government-distributed bottled water and ready-to-eat field rations.

Marine One, the presidential helicopter, landed in Conway shortly before 2:30 p.m. Conway was one of the areas hardest hit by the storm in SC, and the water levels of the Waccamaw River continue to rise.

Even though Florence was downgraded into a tropical depression, officials say conditions are still unsafe.

"There is a strong potential that those who live within the 1-mile evacuation area of the Cape Fear River will be impacted by flooding", the city said in a statement. Fayetteville Mayor Mitch Colvin said it was unclear if the bridge was threatened.

More than 18 million litres of partially treated sewage spilled into the Cape Fear River after power went out at a treatment plant, officials said, and the earthen dam of a pond holding hog waste was breached, spilling its contents.

Trump promised, "Whatever we have to do at the federal level, we will be there".
