Apple CarPlay now supports Google Maps

Google Maps has navigated its way to CarPlay, with Apple's in-car infotainment interface opening up to Google's app with the arrival of iOS 12. Rather than allow a free-for-all of apps to colonize CarPlay, instead the Cupertino firm took a strict hand to what titles it would allow.

This always meant you were stuck with Apple Maps via CarPlay and who uses Apple Maps? Nonetheless, it was an iPhone disconnect that left many drivers frustrated. When Apple announced iOS 12, it made one huge change to CarPlay, where third-party apps could integrate, rather than the standard Apple-only apps you received in earlier versions. Finally, four years on, iPhone owners can now choose to use Google Maps, which is preferred by many iPhone users.

What Google Maps 5 now offers is full mapping and navigation from your car's display. That adds compatibility with CarPlay.

First, download to the latest version of Google Maps from the App Store and you've been updated to iOS 12.

Google has confirmed the move and insists the "same navigation experience found in the app" is present on CarPlay. You can search for a destination and see multiple route options, as well as get live information on traffic jams, congestion, accidents, and other delays along the route.

Since the navigation app works with your Google account, you can save addresses like work and home for quick access to directions.

iOS 12 is available to download right now for a score of iPhone and iPad models.

On the weekend, first images of Google Maps within CarPlay were shared by a beta tester, hinting a public launch would be coming soon.
