Super Typhoon 'Mangkhut' Hits China's Most Populous Province

In Hong Kong, weather authorities issued their maximum alert for the storm, which battered the city with gusts of more than 230 kilometres per hour and left over 100 injured, according to government figures.

Three million people have been evacuated after a deadly typhoon dubbed the "king of storms" hit landfall in China having already ravaged Hong Kong and left dozens dead in the Philippines.

A super typhoon made landfall in China's Guangdong on Sunday, the country's most populous province, after wreaking havoc in Hong Kong and Macau and killing at least 40 people in the Philippines.

Most shops and public services are shut, and more than 800 flights have been cancelled at Hong Kong International Airport - affecting more than 100,000 passengers.

Philippine authorities said a baby and a toddler were among the 29 dead, majority in landslides in mountainous areas that left at least 13 missing.

Philippine rescuers used shovels and their bare hands to claw through mounds of rocky soil, as they desperately looked for dozens of miners feared buried beneath a landslide unleashed by Typhoon Mangkhut.

Almost half a million people were evacuated from seven cities in Guangdong province, on China's southern coast, according to the Associated Press, where Typhoon Mangkhut was expected to make landfall later Sunday afternoon.

Secretary for Security John Lee Ka Chiu said at a briefing on Monday afternoon that the damage caused by Mangkhut was "serious and extensive".

Mangkhut passed over the northern Philippines on Saturday, where at least 65 have been killed and rescue efforts are under way in hopes of finding survivors in areas hit by landslides.

Mangkhut landed at 5 p.m. on Sunday on the coast of Jiangmen City in Guangdong province, packing winds up to 162 km per hour, according to the provincial meteorological station.

Landslides and severe flooding affected some areas, with over 1,500 residents seeking refuge in temporary shelters overnight.

Mangkhut has now been downgraded to a severe typhoon, having approached the coast as a Category 5 storm - the strongest possible - with winds of up to 269km/h.

The typhoon struck at the start of the rice and corn harvesting season in the Philippines' northern breadbasket, prompting farmers to scramble to save what they could of their crops, Cagayan Gov. Manuel Mamba said. A massive evacuation ahead of Mangkhut helped lessen potential casualties, with about 87,000 people evacuating from high-risk areas, officials said.
