Nintendo Announces Fortnite Nintendo Switch Console Bundle

This will protect your save files in the event of a console malfunction, or if you need to make room on your Switch but don't want to lose the save file forever.

Nintendo Online comes with an array of subscription tiers, and features individual and family memberships.

Similar to Xbox Live and PlayStation Plus, Nintendo Switch Online is a subscription service that lets you play games online.

Signing up is also the only way to access HD remasters of old classic titles. As a reminder, it does not require a Nintendo Switch Online membership to play online.

However, in a question about whether or not saves can be backed up locally, the company states, "Local save data backups are not now supported on Nintendo Switch".

So we may be seeing some way to back up saves before long.

Features like voice chat are limited and go through the new smartphone app rather than allowing you to plug in your headphones straight into the Switch console and use an in-line mic. Previously, the FAQ stated explicitly that cloud saves would not be preserved if your Switch Online account was closed.

Fortnite was surprisingly released during Nintendo's E3 2018 Direct presentation, and has since been my preferred platform for playing the game.

Fortnite is immediately available for the Nintendo Switch and is a free download. You may also be able to partially cover your subscription using whatever points you have. Users on Reddit are already looking to buddy up with anyone they can find on message boards.

Having announced a September 18 launch date, it looks like the Nintendo Switch Online service is going live this evening (18th) in the U.S., and therefore early tomorrow morning (19th) in most other territories. In preparation, Nintendo Switch eShop is scheduled for maintenance starting at 5pm PT and will be unavailable for up to 3 hours.
