Kavanaugh accuser has not yet accepted invitation to testify before Congress

Kavanaugh accuser has not yet accepted invitation to testify before Congress

President Trump on Monday stood by his embattled Supreme Court nominee amid accusations of sexual assault, calling Kavanaugh one of the "finest people that I have ever known" while acknowledging a "little delay" may be necessary before the nomination is voted on in the Senate.

"Grassley released a letter on Friday signed by 65 women who say that they knew Kavanaugh when he attended Georgetown Prep, an all-boys high school in Maryland, and that he always treated women with decency and respect".

"So it kind of raises the question, do they want to come to the public hearing or not?"

Debra Katz, a lawyer representing Ford, said in television interviews on Monday that the professor would be willing to testify and called the alleged incident "attempted rape". Judiciary Chairman Sen. Chuck Grassley, (R) of Iowa, said Monday that he will "continue working on a way to hear her out in an appropriate, precedented, and respectful manner".

Trump also again attacked Democrats for "holding" onto the allegations, saying it was "a bad thing that took place" when the story surfaced over the weekend.

The showdown has echoes of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas' contentious confirmation hearings in 1991 involving sexual harassment allegations lodged against him by a law professor named Anita Hill.

"This is a completely false allegation", Kavanaugh said Monday in a written statement. "I think it's part of a pattern".

Beatrice Spates de Lannoy, who was in the class behind Ford at Holton, a private all-girls school in Bethesda, told to The Post, "I believe her".

"She would not do anything to hurt anyone, I know she's a family person".

Testimony from just Kavanaugh and his accuser, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, won't be enough, Democrats said Tuesday. "I applaud Christine Blasey Ford for her courage in coming forward", he wrote.

Ford's allegations come almost a year after the #MeToo movement was popularised following the numerous allegations of sexual misconduct by Hollywood Producer Harvey Weinstein, who has since been charged with rape and other sexual crimes.

Republicans have blasted Democrats for the way in which the accusation came out - at the 11th hour, while for six weeks, the senior Democrat on the committee, Sen.

Democrats are desperate to block Kavanaugh's appointment because they believe he could help overturn Roe vs Wade, the landmark ruling that protects legal access to abortion, as well as protections for racial minorities, unions and the environment.

A day earlier, Republican abruptly agreed to hold a public Judiciary Committee hearing at which Kavanaugh and Ford have been invited to testify.

The confirmation fight comes just weeks before the November 6 congressional elections in which Democrats are seeking to take control of Congress from Trump's party, which could be a major blow to the president's agenda.

Senate Republicans have decided Kavanaugh should defend himself, and he is ready to do so.

Joe Biden, the most senior Democrat on the Judiciary Committee at the time, later apologised for not doing enough to investigate Hill's allegations during the hearings. She was reluctant to come forward.

Thomas, who was nominated by President George H.W. Bush, related in his memoir that when he was first asked by Federal Bureau of Investigation agents whether he made sexual advances to Hill or talked about pornography with her, he replied, "Absolutely not". But they did the right thing and announced on Monday that they will reopen the hearings so that Kavanaugh and his accuser can testify before the judiciary committee next Monday.
