Is Obama’s Return Good Or Bad For Democrats?

Former President Barack Obama came to Cleveland to rally for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray. Bob Casey and Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf, but also other down-ballot races that Democrats are contesting.

Democrats have high hopes in OH after eight years of the Republican administration of Gov. John Kasich, hopes that were bolstered after they fell just over 1,500 votes short of winning an August special election for a congressional seat in a district Donald Trump won by double-digits in 2016.

The 2016 campaign is over, but Obama "continues to dismiss the millions of voters across OH who rejected a continuation of his policies in favor of President Trump's plan for historic tax cuts, new jobs and soaring economic growth", Republican National Committee spokeswoman Mandi Merritt said in a statement. Sherrod Brown, a Democrat who is up for re-election this cycle in a seat the party must hold if it has any chance of wresting control of the U.S. Senate back from Republicans in 2018. "We can flip the balance of power back to the American people". According to Politico, Cordray is neck and neck with Republican candidate, Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine, in the most recent polls.

"We worked hard to turn this economy around", Obama said.

Obama was in closely divided OH to campaign for Democratic gubernatorial candidate Richard Cordray, running mate Betty Sutton, U.S. Sen.

Also appearing with Obama at the rally Thursday in Cleveland will be U.S. Sen.

The appearance is part of a swing across the country by Obama to boost Democrats' efforts to win House seats and state elections. Obama should help spur turnout, especially among black voters whose participation fell off in 2016, Beck said. Cordray resigned previous year to run for governor.

"Cordray will destroy your state", Trump said during the August 24 Ohio Republican Party state dinner in Columbus.
