Swimmer Killed in Rare Cape Cod Shark Attack

Officials closed the beach shortly after the attack.

Witnesses say the man was boogie boarding with a friend when the shark aggressively attacked.

He said he saw a "giant eruption of water" and a "lot of trashing" at the time of the harrowing attack. He realized what was happening when the friend came ashore dragging his injured friend.

The incident happened at Newcomb Hollow Beach around lunchtime on Saturday (US time).

"It was like right out of that movie Jaws". This has turned into Amity Island real quick out here, ' Booth said WBUR.

Booth said it was a quiet day at the beach, and he saw some people boogie-boarding before he noticed some commotion in the water.

In August, a NY man was bitten by a shark at another Cape Cod beach but survived the encounter, according to media reports.

The last fatal shark attack in MA was in 1936, according to the Florida Program for Shark Research at the Florida Museum of Natural History.

A 61-year-old man was severely injured on August 15 after fighting off a shark about 4 miles away from Saturday's attack.

This was the second shark attack on Cape Cod this summer.

Hurley said the Cape Cod District Attorney will handle an investigation in to the incident.

'The inshore waters off Wellfleet are a feeding ground for Great White Sharks.

Newcomb Hollow Beach, where the victim was swimming, has a sign saying "Be Shark Smart" warning swimmers to avoid going near seals and to swim near the shore.

A man in his 20s has died after being injured in a suspected shark attack in the MA in the United States.
