Horror for tourists as rocks fall on to beach on Greek island

On the popular beach of Navia on the Greek island of Zakynthos collapsed part of the rock, which injured seven people.

Navagio beach, also known as "shipwreck beach", is popular with tourists and can be reached only by boat. The rest only had minor injuries.

Among those injured was a 34-year-old woman from the Czech Republic, who suffered a fractured vertebra. O'Connell estimates there are around 400 to 500 people in the area when the rockfall occurred and around a dozen tourist boats were out in the bay.

He said: "The rock that fell would be like a four-storey building falling on to the beach". According to the Associated Press, the incident began when a large chunk of limestone fell from a cliff into the ocean, creating a large wave that caused several small boats to capsize.

The water hit his feet with such a strong force, it knocked him onto his back and went on to cover more than half the beach.

NORAD did not say how close to American airspace the Russian aircraft flew nor in which direction. The news and stories that matter, delivered weekday mornings.

He described the aftermath as "chaos", with families and children running to get to safety on the boats.

While now, no one is missing, the coastguard called in helicopters and boats to search the area, in case anyone was trapped under the rocks.

Rescue services with sniffer dogs are searching the beach for possible victims.

The coastguard later said everyone who had visited the beach on tourist boats had been accounted for. The beach draws its nickname of "Shipwreck Beach" from another disaster when a freighter, the MV Panagiotis, that ran aground there in 1980.

"We started to hear this almighty cracking sound and the first lot came down quickly followed by the second lot", she said.
