End Of The Road For Beetle Car

End Of The Road For Beetle Car

Volkswagen of America said two special Beetle models will be offered during the last model year - Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL - in coupe and convertible body styles. It was Adolf Hitler, at the Berlin auto show in 1938, who introduced a prototype for a small, oddly shaped, low-priced family vehicle that became the Beetle.

Beetles became a global phenomenon after managing to shake off their Nazi roots.

While the Beetle did not originally sell well in the U.S. during the 1950s due to Volkswagen's Nazi origins, its popularity eventually took off in the late 60s and 70s, before American production ceased in 1979. First, the auto was simply called Volkswagen. The result was a crescent-shaped vehicle called the "New Beetle", launched in 1998, which offered playful touches such as a built-in flower vase.

This isn't the first time Volkswagen has ceased US produciton of the Beetle.

Volkswagen revived it in the USA in 1998 as a more modern "New Beetle", but it attracted mainly female buyers. Their increasing popularity in the USA in the 1960s prompted Volkswagen to build its first manufacturing plant in North America in order to meet the demand.

The company is not leaving behind all of its well-known older models.

The company has not ruled out bringing the Beetle back in future but says it has no plans at this time.

"I would also say, 'Never say never.' We're excited to kick off a year of celebrating one of the true icons of the automotive world, with a series of events that will culminate in the end of production in Puebla in July 2019", Woebcken said. Inside, it's optioned with keyless entry and push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, a gloss black center console, rhombus-pattern cloth seating surfaces and three-color ambient lighting.

The end of the Beetle comes at a turning point for Volkswagen.

Surrounded by fuel-emission scandals since 2006, Volkswagen persisted with models such as Jetta, Tiguan and Bettle and shipping cars from its Mexican factory, but dipping worldwide sales and consumer preferance for electric-cars have forced the German brand to brain-storm on a newer strategy.
